The Future That Never Came :(

Why do the nations rage? Why do the people waste their time with futile plans?…But the one who rules in heaven laughs. Psalm 2

I have one question: Why can’t I buy a flying car yet?
It’s not that I really need or even want one, but it feels like I was promised things that I’ll never actually see. As a 10 year old boy, I distinctly remember wondering if I should devote anymore time to learning guitar since it was so obvious they would soon be replaced by those super-kool strapped on keyboards. They were ‘in’ for about 10 minutes.
This afternoon I was fixing the chain on my bicycle (150 year old invention) and it occurred to me to write on this theme…
In today’s (cult)ure of consumerism, we are conditioned to believe that there is something inherently wrong with last years models and ideas. They need to be either justified or replaced by the latest remastered remix. Publishers constantly upgrade the covers of classic books in order for us to even wink at them. Remakes of films less than 20 years old are also feeding our growing appetite for reheated leftovers. Soon the Matrix will be re-reloaded starring the High School Musical alumni*. Language teachers everywhere are fighting the legitimate fear that people will soon start speaking like they txt msg. This is already happening in Britain, innit.
As you gaze upon the coming season of changes falling like leaves throughout our global society, remember this:
The Gospel is still ahead of it’s time.
Every invention and philosophy that ever lived or has yet to be born, is simply playing catch up.
You may be someone who struggles with stories of prophets swallowed by big fish or people who lived to be 700. But just look at the silly things we are asked to believe on a daily basis: selfless politicians, interesting celebrities and this mysterious land of freedom and purpose that commoners can only enter via winning lottery tickets or TV talent shows. We swallow pills like these all day, but the seed that contains eternal life gets spit out like chewing gum on the street, only to be trampled by the latest rotation of trends. But no matter what—-truth will always stick.
Regardless of how strong or refined your faith is, it will constantly be bombarded with ideas and objects that will attempt to out date eternity. The world is still hard at work making flying car promises that it can never fulfill. I am still a big fan of progress, but I also know that it has many flaws it tries too hard to hide. Flying cars will only need flying mechanics.
Remember that in Christ, we have the simplicity of bicycle with the power of the Millennium Falcon. It is only through Him that we can do all things.
Enjoy the Ride,

**The picture above is a guy I met in Anaheim awhile back. The wings actually folded down when he gained speed, but nope. It couldn’t fly:(
